School Values and Community

Our school values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning, and provide an environment which prepares our pupils as confident, happy citizens.

Vision

Everything we do at Birchanger Church of England Primary School is built on the Christian values of Love, Care, Courage and Truth. This ensures that every child can achieve their full potential in a safe, happy, caring and fulfilling environment and that they are equipped to make a positive contribution to society. We are committed to the pursuit of excellence in all we do – in our work, our play and our relationships with each other.

This means that:

Love

We treat each other with respect and kindness.

We always listen to each other’s point of view.

We help and support each other in our learning.

‘Just as I have loved you, you should love each other.’           (John 1: 34)

Care

We understand our responsibilities and care for our school, local environment and our community.

We understand our duty to care for and value the amazing world we live in.

We learn about and care for people worldwide who suffer and whose lives are hard and look for ways to actively help them.

‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ (Acts 20:35)

Courage

We are enthusiastic and resilient in our learning so that we can achieve our very best.

We learn to support each other to share and overcome our doubts and fears.

We learn to support each other to always do the very best we can.

We learn to be confident and happy about the person we are.

We learn to celebrate and share in other people’s success.

‘My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.’ (John 10: 10)

Truth

We learn the importance of being truthful in all situations.

We learn how to make right and good decisions for us and for others.

We are encouraged to be true to ourselves.

‘Stand your ground, putting on the sturdy belt of truth’

(Ephesians 6:14)

Birchanger Community

The village

It is very important to us that we maintain strong links with the village community. We have an independent nursery unit on our site. In the past we have encouraged local people to come and share their skills and knowledge with the children by running clubs or talking to them in class. We have invited members of the community into school for lunch and celebrations and take part in church services and village events.  We are looking forward to being able to resume these events as soon as we can do so safely.

The history of Birchanger Primary School

Birchanger School was first founded in the 1860’s. Up to 1900 the school had as few as 26 pupils and as many as 88, about what it is now is 109 on roll. It was not unknown for children to have time off to help with the harvest in September and October.

School trips have been taking place for many years. It’s known that in the 1920’s there were trips to the seaside and to the Empire Exhibition in London.

The old school building still exists in the village, and the opening of the new School building was opened by the Bishop of Colchester on Friday 19th February 1982 and in 2019 Bishop Roger came back to see us.
